Liquid wallpaper is a modern material that combines aesthetics and functionality. It is a mixture of cellulose or cotton fibers with the addition of an adhesive composition, which allows you to create a seamless coating with a unique texture.
However, the question arises: is it possible to apply liquid wallpaper to a wooden surface?
Yes, you can! Now we will tell you how to properly prepare the surface, liquid wallpaper, and also a little about their advantages.
Recommendations for preparing a wooden surface
-
Method 1.
The surface of any wood materials is covered with alkyd enamel, for example, PF-115, white. This enamel is used for painting and protecting both wood materials and steel structures from moisture. In terms of protection, it is an excellent solution. However, it should be taken into account that during application and for about two days after, a strong smell will remain in the room, and therefore the room must be well ventilated. -
Method 2.
We recommend you to use concentrated primer AQUABLOCK. First application: if you dilute the AQUABLOCK primer concentrate with water in a ratio of 1:10, you will get a regular acrylic primer suitable for preparing standard surfaces. However, in the case of preparing wood boards, we use only its second application: the AQUABLOCK primer concentrate is applied to the surface undiluted. The primer is virtually odorless, it is quite viscous, and after drying has excellent moisture-proofing properties. When applied undiluted, it creates a colorless film on the surface of wood materials that water can no longer overcome. Drying time: about 3 hours.
And only after this, you can paint with white water-based paint or primer paint with quartz filler. It makes the surface white, primed and rough. However, it is not a moisture insulator in itself, and the use of the AQUABLOCK primer concentrate before applying the primer paint is mandatory for the correct preparation of the wood panels. Drying time: 4 hours.
Regardless of whether we used the first or second method of preparation, our surface is already ready for applying liquid wallpaper.
The process of applying liquid wallpaper to wood
After preparing the surface, you can begin applying liquid wallpaper to wood:
- Mixing: To prepare liquid wallpaper for use, simply pour it into a clean plastic container (basin, bucket) and fill it with warm water at a temperature of 40-50° C. After this, the soaked mass must be mixed manually just enough so that there are no dry areas left in the mixture. Liquid wallpaper is soaked for at least 8 hours. Immediately before application, the soaked liquid wallpaper must be mixed manually to raise the liquid from the bottom of the container.
- Application: Using a plastic spatula, apply the mixture evenly onto the prepared surface in a layer 1–2 mm thick.
- Drying: Allow the coating to dry, drying time is usually 24-48 hours.
Advantages of liquid wallpaper
When properly prepared and applied, liquid wallpaper on wooden surfaces has a number of advantages:
- Environmental friendliness: Liquid wallpaper is made from environmentally friendly materials, which ensures safety for health and the environment.
- Vapor permeability: The coating allows the walls to "breathe", preventing the formation of mold and mildew.
- Heat and sound insulation: Due to its structure, liquid wallpaper improves the heat and sound insulation characteristics of the room.
- Repairability: If a section of the coating is damaged, it can be easily restored by applying a new portion of the mixture to the damaged area.
Applying liquid wallpaper to wooden surfaces is possible and can give the interior a unique and aesthetic look.
